Understanding Sinusitis:
Causes, Symptoms, and Modern Treatment Options
Causes, Symptoms, and Modern Treatment Options

Sinusitis is one of the most common ENT problems and affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the sinus cavities become inflamed due to infection, allergy, or blockage of natural drainage pathways. Patients often complain of facial pain, headache, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and reduced sense of smell.
Acute sinusitis usually follows a common cold and may improve with proper medical treatment. However, when symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks, the condition is called chronic sinusitis. In such cases, the underlying cause may be a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, or long-standing inflammation.
Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Mild cases are treated with medications, nasal sprays, and allergy control. When medical treatment fails, endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) may be recommended. This modern, minimally invasive procedure helps restore natural sinus drainage and ventilation.
The goal of sinus treatment is not just temporary relief, but long-term control of symptoms and prevention of recurrence. Proper diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan are the keys to successful management of sinus disease.
